The original Aumakua is believed to have been obtained from one of the Hawaiian Islands in 1779 during Captain Cook's third voyage. This highly intriguing artifact made international headlines and television news in 1978 when it was sold at the world famous auction house, Sotheby's of London, England to a private collector in five minutes for an incredible $462,500. Formerly the property of the Earls of Warick, the owner was George Ortiz, a Bolivian tin heir who was forced to sell it to finance a $2 million ransom for the return of his kidnapped daughter. |
