Fishermen's God

Fishermen's God

Expertly sculpted duplicates of the originals from the Cook Islands (Raratonga) and Nukuhiva Island in the Marquesas Island group North of Tahiti. There were a number of these squat little fellows but the prominent penis is unusual in Polynesian sculptures. The originals are part of the irreplaceable collections of the Museum fur Volkerkunder, Berlin, Germany and the Peabody Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge Mass. Fishing in ancient Polynesia demanded, then as now, high skills as well as good luck and guidance. These figures were placed in the bow of outrigger canoes to bring fishermen that essential luck and guidance.

Order your choice of these handsome artifacts of the past for yourself or as a gift. Whether displayed in a boat, in a den or office or in the garden, it's sure to bring something special to any setting.
