Classic Hawaiian god sculpture

This impressive woodcarving, handcrafted by modern artists supplementing only the modern steel chisel and wooden mallet for those tools used by ancient Polynesians, is very intricate and a difficult image to sculpt.

Imagine then the skill, muscle and imagination of the sculptor of the original, now in the Musee Royal Teruven, Belgium; who cut such intricate glory with stone adzes, chisels and shark-tooth engravers.

Such tools, which to us seem crude, but in the hands of a skilled sculptor, were as good, though perhaps not as quick, as anything modern man has been able to devise.

This is the classic god statue of Hawaii. He looks ferocious but to Hawaiians they might have seemed kindly in an awesome way. This carving is an excellent addition to any Tiki collection.
