Stick God

Hawaiian "Stick God"

This "stick god" was common among early Hawaiians because of the convenience of the stick for placement in the ground or thatch walls of houses for ceremonial and decorative uses. The images themselves were not revered; they were merely receptacles in which the spirit from other worlds could reside while a ceremony was being conducted.

This particular example is unique due to its size, 22 inches tall, and for the helmet crest usually found only on much larger artifacts.

This intriguing figure comes with a matching, detachable wooden support base to allow flexibility in how it is displayed.

The original artifact is in the collection of the Bishop Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii.
